Air Barrier Testing Services...

We provide air barrier performance testing and diagnostic evaluation services in accordance with ASTM E779 (2003), ASTM E1827-96 (2002), ASTM C1060-90 (1997) and ASTM E1186-03. Air Barrier Testing is a division of Pie Forensic Consultants' (Pie's) quality assurance consulting department.

Air Barrier Testing is currently one of only a handful of companies listed by the US Army Corps of Engineers as an approved vendor for building envelope sealing performance testing and infrared thermography diagnostics services.

Our experts have experience conducting air tightness testing with fan pressurization and depressurization to accurately determine the normalized air leakage rate of large building enclosures.

The growing awareness of energy efficiency, green building, high performance buildings, and uncontrolled airflow (infiltration or exfiltration) through the building enclosure has led to performance based requirements for the air barrier. The incorporation and quantitative performance testing of a continuous air barrier or wind wash barrier is becoming a recognized necessity in the construction of buildings and in some cases a requirement of new or retrofit building construction by federal, state and local jurisdictions.

While air barrier performance testing may be a requirement for your next project, one should also consider the cost of correcting a failed air barrier after the fact. In addition to providing air barrier performance testing, PIE offers design development assistance, plan and specification reviews, industry professional training seminars, on-site quality assurance observations and other building performance testing services as it relates to building enclosure systems (air, water, vapor and thermal). Our Total Enclosure Commissioning Program (PIE-TEC) is modeled after the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Guideline 3-2006 for building enclosure commissioning.
